Basel - Lucerne via Läufelfingen - Wolhusen

Let's take the scenic route! That a train would drive this exact route - it pretty much never happens, so that makes this video special. We're also looking at some lines we haven't seen yet in this direction on this channel. We start by taking the historic route (1857) from Basel to Olten, via Läufelfingen. This includes some pretty steep ramps between Sissach and Olten, including Switzerland's first railway viaduct and tunnel passing under a mountain range, both labelled during the video. In 1916, a base tunnel was built, which eliminated the need to add locomotives in Sissach and Olten for the steep gradients. In most countries the old line would have been abandoned - but here we are travelling on it in 2020! It remains active for a local train that has been planned to be replaced by buses for decades, however has kept the strong support of the local community. The line also acts as an alternative route for when the base tunnel is closed for maintenance. For long term subscribers, you may remember this video from many years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i48yeOWpqtM&t=31s It was a train of mine that was diverted due to construction work (albeit at night). @RailwayEmotions has also recently released a video of a diverted train. From Olten, we take the new (1981) direct connection line to Rothrist, where we take the old line to Langenthal. From there we take a BLS line, formerly part of the united Huttwil railways through many beautiful towns and valleys, including Huttwil & Wolhusen. You might be asking yourself what the purpose of this trip was. It was actually to school some drivers on these lines. Due to this, the sound was recorded from the rear cab - unfortunately not at great quality, but it does the job. If anybody would like to support this work, there is a paypal link below. Donations will be used for equipment and software in order to bring you higher quality videos. https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=A86KRP9Q7JQDW&source=url Thanks for watching and have a great day!
